Wow! We are so excited to be apart of this Great Veggie Adventure with Hidden Valley and to represent Houston, Texas (aka “H-town”) for a myriad of reasons: H stands for Haute/Hot, Humid, and Happening!
H-town has the perfect climate culmination for year-round gardening. Even in the late summer under a sweltering heat wave, we can produce a ton of okra, sweet potatoes, squash, eggplants, melons, beans, peppers, and pumpkins and get a great jumpstart in spring, as March ushers in temperatures in the 70’s. When our Northern and Midwest friends are still under a blanket of snow and frozen ice, we are getting our gardening on! To date, we have eaten, bagged up, collected seeds, and composted our cold seasonal crops and are already experiencing buds of tiny tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers. We have cleared out our Veggie Adventure bed to cultivate some crazy, interesting veggies like lemon cucumbers, suyo long cucumbers, scalloped summer squash, Nodding onions, hyssop, and Echinacea flowers for teas. It’s going to be a year for the risk taking, and with trowels in hand, we’re up for exploration.
Every child at Tinsley Elementary gets a chance to garden, taste, and explore “Turtle Greens Garden” through their enrichment rotation on a weekly basis. We have seen an improvement in science as well as the consumption of fresh produce since we implemented our edible gardening program last year. The afterschool culinary arts/gardening Garden2Grub Club has been featured on the Cooking Channel for Hidden Valley® Ranch Salad Dressings and you can see that kids really “Dig Edible Education.” Check out our video posts for yourself and see how we’re growing healthy and happy kids here deep in the South. Time to get growing!
