Button mushrooms — every kid’s favorite variety — have a clean, mild flavor, which can adapt to a variety of recipes. But with over 300 kinds of commercially grown mushrooms available, there’s a lot more to discover. They come in all shapes and sizes, from chanterelles with fluted caps to toothpick-thin enoki to portobellos as big as dinner plates. And they’re all yummy dipped in Hidden Valley® Ranch dressing or dip, or tossed and roasted with one of our seasoning mixes to create the ultimate stuffed mushroom recipe.

Sprouting with Nutrients

Because they’re 80 to 90 percent water, mushrooms are low in calories, fat and sodium. They’re also high in potassium — in fact, one medium portobello contains more potassium than a banana. Studies have also found that white button mushrooms are high in phytonutrients that can help reduce the risk of breast and prostate cancer. So go ahead — sauté them, use them in salads or browse through our great mushroom recipes and make something delicious and healthy for dinner tonight.

Pick, Store and Prep Mushrooms

Mushrooms are a wonderful addition to your table. Here are a few simple tips to keep them fresh and delicious.

Pick

  • Choose mushrooms with fresh, springy caps. A little dirt is okay.
  • Avoid any that are wet or very dry.
  • For kids, try lighter colored mushrooms with tighter “gills” — they tend to be milder in flavor than darker, wild varieties.

Store

  • Place in a paper bag in the refrigerator. Paper won’t collect condensation like plastic and will help the mushrooms last longer. So even if they came in a plastic bag, it’s smart to switch to paper for storage.

Prep

  • Don’t wash mushrooms. That’s right — just give the dirt a quick brush off. Rinsing or dunking in water will drain some of their flavor.
  • Try sautéing an exotic variety. Chanterelles, shiitakes and portobellos take on deep, rich flavors when cooked.
