Radishes

Small and spicy, radishes add a burst of flavor to any salad or veggie tray. Let’s learn more about these snappy veggies.

Cuties with a Kick

Radishes look so small and sweet that you might not expect them to be so full of spice on your first bite. But it’s this flavor and crunch that makes them ideal for dipping in cool, creamy Ranch and a must-have for any salad. To tone down the spice for kids, simply trim the skin.

Red is the most common color, but they can also be white, pink, yellow, purple or even black. The yellow variety has hints of lemon and is worth seeking out at your local farmer’s market.

Daikon or “Chinese Radish” is a large, white variety first grown in East Asia. With their interesting carrot shape and milder flavor, they’re an excellent way to introduce your kids to radishes.

Tiny But Nutritious

Low in fat, cholesterol and calories, radishes score high in dietary fiber, folate, vitamin C, potassium, riboflavin and even calcium. The leafy tops offer even more vitamin C than the roots — about 6 times more — and are a significant source of calcium and iron.

Pick, Store & Prep Radishes

Add a dash of spice to your grocery list with radishes. Here are some simple tips to enjoy them at their best.

Pick

  • Look for firm, smooth radishes.
  • Avoid soft spots or blemishes.
  • Check the tops. Make sure the leaves are green and crisp.

Store

  • Take off the tops. Remove the green tops before storing unless you plan to use them that same day.
  • Keep them chilled. Store in the refrigerator in a plastic bag and they should keep for about 2 weeks.

Prep

  • Scrub well and trim off both ends.
  • Peel for a milder taste. If your kids don't care for the peppery kick, slice off the skin.
  • Don’t throw out the tops. The greens are delicious steamed, sautéed, or tossed in a salad.
  • Try roasting. Radishes are great roasted in a little olive oil. You'll discover a new depth of flavor you didn't know they had.
