Spring is officially here and April brings us National Garden Month, a perfect time for families to break ground for a new vegetable garden!
Even in this early part of the season, there are welcomed signs of life in our home garden. Garlic that was planted in October is popping up through our rich organic soil. We have also discovered new growth on spinach plants that survived over the long Chicago winter. My husband, Verd, has already been hard at work preparing the soil – aerating it with a broadfork, and reshaping the beds to make them wider. Within a week, we’ll begin planting cool weather crops from seed, which include peas, lettuce, spinach and more. Toward the end of the month, we’ll transplant broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage.
