Pack your picnic basket and head outside with this great recipe in honor of National Picnic Day! Kids can create their own spinning pinwheels, while snacking on easy-to-make BLT pinwheel sandwiches.
Activity: Create Your Own Pinwheels
This fun activity is especially great for a rainy day. The pinwheels are easy to customize and make unique by drawing, painting, or gluing on the paper before you put it together. Put several pinwheels in a vase for a fun décor idea!
Paper (origami or other lightweight square paper)
Colored pencils, marker, paint, colorful paper or foil
Using a pencil, divide the paper into four equal squares. Color each square, either with paint, colored pencils, or marker, or by gluing colored paper, magazine cutouts, or foil.
Draw two pencil lines diagonally from corner to corner of the paper. Cut along each of the four diagonal line from the outside, leaving 1 inch from the center. Label the same side of each 4 lines with an X, then fold each marked side into the center so there is slight overlap. Securing with your fingers, puncture a hole with a push pin.
Holding the flaps down, place a map pin in the hole. Put a small bead on the sharp side of the pin. This will create space so the wheel can spin. Press the pin, through the bead, onto the stick. Spin and enjoy!
